A Toolkit and Best Practices for Involuntary Staff Terminations

BathkeThe presentation will review a toolkit created at the University of Iowa that discusses the key considerations and management best practices before, during, and after the termination meeting for an involuntary staff termination.  It provides a checklist for each stage of the involuntary termination that should be completed before the termination meeting.  Finally, this toolkit contains common termination meeting problems and provides best practice suggestions for how to anticipate and respond to the problems.

Learning objectives for this session include:

  • Preparing you for the difficult and awkward involuntary termination meeting.
  • Encouraging you to plan for the involuntary termination to prevent a situation that could increase risk to your company.
  • Familiarizing you with some key considerations and best practices for involuntary terminations

Josey Bathke has her JD and MBA from the University of Iowa.  She has been an employment law attorney for over ten years.  She has negotiated contracts ranging from individual employee separation agreements up to $14 million sales agreements.  In her current role as the Director of University Employee and Labor Relations at the University of Iowa she provides advice to management and individual employees on issues ranging from labor law, employment law, HR best practice, strategic planning, and grievances.  She is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor at the UI Tippie College of Business in the Management & Organizations department.
