Participants will learn about alternatives to paying non-exempt employees by the hour, strategies to prevent off-the-clock work and reduce overtime, how to calculate regular rate of pay when bonuses, commissions, and other special payments, and how and when deductions can be made from paychecks.
Learning objectives for this session include:
- Participants will learn how to establish criteria paying non-exempt employees other than by the hour that comply with the Fair Labor Standards Act, Iowa Minimum Wage Act and Iowa Wage Payment and Collection Act.
- Participants will gain knowledge of the most recent legal decisions regarding what activities constitute hours work and how to establish criteria and policies that prevent off-the-clock work and reduce overtime in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, Iowa Minimum Wage Act and Iowa Wage Payment and Collection Act.
- Participants will gain a working knowledge of the proper way to calculate employees’ regular rate of pay in compliance with the Fair Labor Standards Act, Iowa Minimum Wage Act when employees are paid bonuses, commissions, or other special payments.
- Participants will learn how to establish criteria for paycheck deductions and garnishments so that the deductions are made in compliance with the Iowa Wage Payment and Collection Act and the FLSA.
