Human Resources professionals will learn about the employer’s legal obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act and how to successfully employ persons with disabilities. By the end of the session attendees will be able to: 1) identify when a disability qualifies under the ADA, 2) how to identify an employee’s request for an accommodation and how to respond to these requests, 3) learn examples of reasonable accommodations, and 4) how to create an inclusive culture for persons with disabilities. We will provide examples of the most challenging disability cases at the University of Iowa encompassing both physical and mental health disabilities.
Learning objectives for this session include:
- Identifying an employer’s legal obligations under the ADA.
- Identifying when a disability qualifies under the ADA.
- Learning how to identify an employee’s request or need for an accommodation and how to respond by using the Interactive Process under the ADA.
- Learning ho to apply lessons learned from challenging cases at the University of Iowa.
- Learning how to create an inclusive culture for persons with disabilities.
Rachelle Stewart is a Senior HR Specialist in Faculty and Staff Disability Services at the University of Iowa. Rachelle is part of a team that provides guidance and oversight to the University campus in the employment of individuals with health conditions through the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. She is a self-described FMLA junkie.
Rachelle received her BA from the University of Iowa and has worked there for 17 years including roles in payroll and as a HR Generalist.
Nathan Stucky is Director of Faculty and Staff Disability Services for University of Iowa Human Resources. Nathan and his team provide guidance and oversight to the University campus in the employment of individuals with health conditions through the application of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act. He also provides planning and develop of educational programs, employment policy and best practice, and services for individuals with health conditions.
Nathan is an Iowa Native and received his BA degree in Business Management: Human Resources and his BA degree in Music from the University of Northern Iowa, in Cedar Falls, Iowa.
